Confidently take great photos of your kids

with your “fancy” camera in 6 weeks without feeling overwhelmed, confused by the camera lingo, or the nightmarish “what-do-I-do-next syndrome.”
Let's do this!

If you’re a busy mom

who wants to be able to take great photos with the camera you’ve invested in (or will investing in) and you’ve looked to YouTube and maybe even a beginner photographer book for some clarity on the subject,  then you already know that you need step-by-step guidance to using your DSLR or mirrorless camera.

Hi, Y'all! I'm Kayla.

Mom to my 4 year-old son, Worth (and little Wisdom on the way), and wearer of peanut butter. (Like, how does it literally get everywhere?) Bigger question: How on Earth did the boy standing in front of me with chocolate on his face turn into a toddler without me even noticing it? I’ve only been doing this mom thing for a short time and I’m already clinging to his newborn photos.

Mom, I get it. I am here to help you preserve this precious time.
I'm a motherhood photographer from the Texas/Arkansas line who is also a certified educator in both states. I love Harry Potter, coffee, and cabernet.  For the past 3 years I’ve been teaching moms how to use their cameras in-person with live workshops. I am so excited to be able to serve those outside of my hometown with Mom Photography Membership.

The reasons for learning to use a “fancy” camera are obvious, the path to doing it successfully is anything but.

You may have gotten the camera thinking the automatic setting would be enough (I mean… it wasn’t cheap!) But after taking only a few photos, you quickly realized that the results were no better than you can do with your phone. Perhaps you then tired learning what all the buttons do by watching countless YouTube videos. If you’re super committed, you may have even a basic photography class or 2. All of them left you feeling more and more confused and frustrated.

Even with the best of intentions to learn, most moms who try to learn to use their camera end up abandoning their camera altogether… leaving it to collect dust and countless precious moments uncaptured.

J O I N . NOW

Even if you have a family photographer you LOVE (which I hope you do,) knowing how to use your camera will allow to:

capture beautiful everyday moments of childhood.

Mama, you have a front-row seat to the very best moments of childhood. The silly. The messy. The funny. The ball games. And everything in between. These are moments are you’ll want to relive for years and years to come.

fill your walls with precious moments that no one but you is present for.

The posed and traditional photos on our walls are wonderful! Heck, I’m a professional photographer who makes a living selling these kinds of photos. But what if you also had photos from ball games, vacations, and ordinary gorgeous moments filling your walls as well? Talk about a conversation starter.

confidentially use your camera in any situation.

The best images are those that aren’t planned. Being able to grab your camera in a hurry and confidentially program it for any situation is key to getting the most out of your camera (and getting those gorgeous photos you know your camera is capable of.)

preserve your family’s legacy.

I don’t have to tell you that time is fleeting quickly. Your babies are growing and changing right before your eyes. Not only are you taking photos for yourself, but for generations to come. You are literally capturing your family history… beautifully.

Here’s why most moms abandoned their brand-new cameras (seriously, check Facebook marketplace. There are cameras by the dozens for sale)

Without a super clear, step-by-step guide (with words that moms actually understand,) most people are completely clueless on how to use a camera.

They fall victim to the paralyzing “camera lingo” (they use those words like they are common or something,) a feeling of there is simply not enough minutes in a day to dedicate to learning their camera, or they simply lack clarity in only one or two areas of their camera and just need to help to put all the pieces together.

Even though there are countless resources on photography for beginners

(go ahead and Google it… there’s literally millions) very few are actually created for beginners. As a professional photographer, I studied these resources (both paid and free) and learned they all were failing miserably because they are teaching to other professionals… not beginners.

The key ingredient to your photography success is learning in a way you’ve never learned anything else before.

I’d love to show you exactly how you can learn.

Here’s why it’s been so difficult to learn to use your camera.

You’re a busy mom already. Between dinner, laundry, and car drop-off, there’s literally no time to figure out what all those videos you watched, books you’ve read, and class you’ve attended are trying to teach you about your camera.

At this point, you may feel completely lost, overwhelmed, and maybe even thought that you were not capable of learning this topic because it’s so confusing.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand time: learning to use a camera is not hard. TEACHING someone to use a camera is. And sadly, there are a lot of resources out there that are just simply bad.

Top 2 Lies that moms are believing...

I don’t have enough time.

You’re a busy mom doing all-the things. Learning a new skill may seem like too big of a thing to add to your already overflowing plate.

Learning to use a camera with a guide will who will give you specific step-by-step instructions will save you SO MUCH time.

It’s too complicated to learn.

Yes, it is if you don’t have a guide and you’re trying to piece together all the information together yourself.. You need someone to break it down for you step-by-step and piece-by-piece.

Mom Photography School

A step-by-step guide to learning to use your camera to take gorgeous photos of your kids with confidence.

I’ve taken everything I’ve learned professionally as a photographer and  personally as a mom and combined with my teaching background to give you the ultimate guide to learning your camera with confidence (without the overwhelm.) With my course, you’ll not only be learning what to by following my guidance on screen, but you are also given 4 assignments that will reinforce everything you’ve been taught. This will no doubt give you those gorgeous photos you’ve been longing for.

Mom Photography School is the ONLY program of its kind that:

  • breaks the lessons up into time manageable pieces so that not only do you understand more easily in these smaller lessons, but you will also have the time to do it.
  • gives you a step-by-step guide that will keep you from being overwhelmed. You will know exactly what to do, where you are going, and what you need to do next.

The MPS Roadmap

Foundations

Set a Good Foundation

Setting a good foundation of camera knowledge is key to being able to use it with ease (and not be confused.)

  • Learn exactly what all those buttons are on your camera.
  • The biggest factor above all else in photography is light. We will unpack the different kinds of light and why they are important.
  • With my guidance, you will set up your camera so that it is ready for you to learn to use it.

The Exposure Triangle

This is where we will start diving deep into learning our cameras.

While this module is complex and in-depth, I will be breaking it down piece-by-piece. Each lesson is followed up with a tried-and-true assignment that will have you shooting your camera in manual mode in no time.

  • The Exposure Triangle is made up of ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. We dive deep into what each of those elements are, what they do, and why they are so important.
  • Did you know there are really only 2 major ways to royally mess up a photo? Yes, only 2. The bad news is that getting them wrong can be super easy if you don’t understand. I unpack each of these in module 2.
  • Lenses are quite a mystery to a lot of people.  How do they work? How are some better than others? All those questions plus so much more will be answered.

Metering

This is where the magic happens.

You will now take everything you learn and piece it together. The result = getting the photo you want every single time!

  • Implement everything you’ve learned in this course and put it together with what is called metering. I will thoroughly explain what it is and how it works.
  • Use my proven system, which I’ve named the MPS Workflow, that breaks down the exact process I use both professionally and personally to ensure I get my shot.
  • You’re finally assignment will be your favorite so far with the most amazing results: gorgeous photos you took that you will be proud to share!

Questions that my top students asked before enrolling in Mom Photography School:

Am I going to have enough time to add this course to my busy schedule?

I’m always so happy to hear this question because I can so relate (as well as my top students.)  This course is designed to not add to your already busy schedule but to seamlessly fit in. I know 1 thing for SURE if you are reading this… you’re a mom. The assignments are created to complement your family time together… not take away from it. You will be taking photos of your kids. The lesson are all under the time it takes to watch one episode of Gilmore Girls and most weeks you’ll only be doing one lesson.

Is my camera good enough for this course?

Can you take the lens off and on on your camera and is there some sort of screen on the back that lets you preview the photo? Then you are good!  A good camera does NOT make a good photographer. Because I am a professional photographer and my camera literally helps my family pay bills, I have a super expensive fancy camera. If I were to hand that camera to my husband, it would be worthless to him. He cannot use it just as he cannot use a $400 camera from Target. The best camera is the one you have in your hand!
